Volvo has made a “historic” pledge that is going to further promote the adoption of all-electric and hybrid solutions for cars. The company has comitted to fitting all cars with an electric motor in a couple of years. What this means is that no Volvo car sold from 2019 will have an internal combustion engine that runs on gas only. The engines will either be hybrid with a secondary electric setup or the cars will be full electric. Volvo won’t sell gas-only cars from 2019, though.
The company says that this is going to signal the historic end of cars that only have an internal combustion engine. With this move, Volvo is placing electrification at the very core of its future business.
“People increasingly demand electrified cars and we want to respond to our customers’ current and future needs. You can now pick and choose whichever electrified Volvo you wish,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo.
The company has said that it’s going to introduce a diverse portfolio of electrified cars across its entire model range. The new models will include fully electric cars, plug-in hybrids, and mild hybrid cars.
Volvo is going to launch five fully electric cars between 2019 and 2021, three of them will be Volvo models while two will be high-performance electric models from Polestar which is Volo’s performance car division. Volvo is going to provide more information about these cars at a later date.
