Samsung is known in the VR space for its Gear VR headset which requires one of its many compatible Galaxy smartphones to function. It’s no secret that the company has been working on a standalone VR headset which wouldn’t require a smartphone. Samsung has now unveiled a reference design of its ExynosVR standalone virtual reality headset.
Samsung unveiled the reference design of the ExynosVR headset at the Mobile World Congress in Shanghai last week. The specs are said to include an ARM Makli G71 MP20 GPY and a M2 Dual 2.5GHz processor.
Reports suggest that the handset has support for 4K resolution at 75 frames-per-second and Wide Quad High Definition (WQHD) at 90fps. The headset itself appears to have several cameras on its face, they might be there for inside-out positional tracking.
No further information about this handset has been offered as yet by Samsung so it’s unclear what the company’s plans are for this device. It may just be testing its technology with this reference design which will ultimately make its way to a consumer-focused standalone VR headset.
A standalone VR headset would go a long way in improving Samsung’s position in the VR market. For starters, it wouldn’t require people to buy one of its smartphones just to get in on the action. Moreover, from the looks of it, the headset will have more power and will thus be able to power more immersive virtual reality experiences.
