Sound is an integral part of a TV show, movie or game. It’s essential in creating an immersive environment that viewers and players so anxiously long for. The Dolby Atmos advanced audio format goes a long way in making that happen and Netflix has now announced that it has flipped the switch on Dolby Atmos support on the world’s largest online content streaming service.

Dolby Atmos support comes to Netflix with the Okja movie. It’s the first of several planned releases on Netflix which will have support for this advanced audio format. Okja is a critically praised film directed by Bong Joon Ho and it’s now available on Netflix globally.

Dolby Atmos is basically surround sound on steroids. It changes the sound profile dynamically on a standard 5.1, 7.1 or 9.1 setup to position the sound in real time based on the speaker set up. This enables the audio format to leverage vertical and horizontal speaker placement so that it can create immersive soundscapes for a significantly better listening experience.

The only caveat here is that Netflix’s Dolby Atmos support can only be accessed using the Netflix app on the Xbox One console and 2017 LG OLED TVs. Netflix is going to enable this support on other devices in the coming weeks.
