Microsoft Closing Surface Hub Factory In Oregon

The Surface Hub is a giant 85 inch 4K display from Microsoft that’s aimed at businesses that require a powerful computing solution that can also double as a space for collaboration and presentation. Microsoft has been selling this product for over a year now. The Surface Hub was previously being manufactured at a facility in Oregon. According to a new report, Microsoft is now shutting down that factory and will manufacture the Surface Hub elsewhere.

The Oregonian is reporting that Microsoft is shutting down its Surface Hub manufacturing plant in Oregon. 124 jobs will be lost as a result of this plant closure.

This doesn’t mean that Microsoft is going to stop manufacturing or selling the Surface Hub. This closure doesn’t seem to have been caused by lackluster interest in the product itself.

Microsoft hasn’t confirmed where it’s going to shift manufacturing to now that the plant in Oregon will be shut down. It’s likely that Microsoft will move manufacturing to China where the bulk of its Surface products are already manufactured.

While the company won’t confirm if the Surface Hub will be made in China now, it did confirm to The Verge in an email that the company is “consolidating” its Surface manufacturing and that this will “result in the closure of the Wilsonville, OR office and factory.”

“We remain committed to the Surface Hub product line and will move forward with Surface Hub development in Redmond,” it adds.
