In a recent interview with News.com.au, Cameron was asked about the franchise’s future, and whether or not it might have already run its course. According to Cameron, he believes that modern technology is starting to catch up to what was considered to be futuristic back then, and because of that perhaps it could be time to reinvent the franchise.
Cameron was quoted as saying, “I am in discussions with David Ellison, who is the current rights holder globally for the Terminator franchise and the rights in the U.S. market revert to me under U.S. copyright law in a year and a half so he and I are talking about what we can do. Right now we are leaning toward doing a three-film arc and reinventing it.”
However it seems that despite reinventing the franchise, it looks like the original Terminator Arnold Schwarzenegger will continue to be a part of it. Earlier this year the actor confirmed that a new Terminator movie is in the works, and that Cameron has some good ideas on how to proceed.
