If this sounds familiar, it is because earlier this year during CES, Intel’s VP of wearables seemed to suggest that Intel could be moving away from making their own wearables and instead focus on partnerships/collaborations. The latest report from CNBC seems to have all but confirmed it, except that Intel seems to be out of the wearables game for now.
In fact there have been signs that this was an inevitability. CNBC quotes a TechCrunch article from back in November last year which said that Intel was taking a step back from wearables. This was after their plans for the Basis fitness watch did not pan out the way that they had hoped. The company at that time had denied that they stepping back, but given that we have since seen a lack of new wearables from the company, it is clear that won’t be happening anytime soon.
Intel has yet to comment on CNBC’s report or issue an official statement, so for now we guess you should probably take it with a grain of salt.
