There is the concern that one day robots will take over the jobs that humans are supposed to do. So far we are seeing quite a few examples, such as in factories where robots can do the job of many humans, faster, more accurate, and cheaper. This is apparently why over in India, union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari will not allow driverless cars.According to a report from the Hindustan Times, Gadkari was quoted as saying, “We won’t allow driverless cars in India. I am very clear on this. We won’t allow any technology that takes away jobs. In a country where you have unemployment, you can’t have a technology that ends up taking people’s jobs.”
It is true that self-driving cars will remove the need for taxi drivers and personal drivers, but whether or not banning the technology is the way to go about this is unclear. However there is an upside to driverless cars is that it could prove to be safer as a computer’s reaction time is generally faster than a person’s.
It could also be more energy efficient since sometimes some people are very heavy footed on the gas pedal. It has been estimated that 5 million jobs could be taken over by robots come 2020, and some people like Bill Gates are proposing that if robots are going to take over jobs, then they had better start paying taxes as well.
