The runaway success of the Amazon Echo has led to many other tech companies jumping on the bandwagon. While Amazon remains the clear winner in this space, they are all trying to get a piece of the pie for themselves. According to a new report, China-based e-commerce giant Alibaba is interested in launching its own Amazon Echo rival.
The reports suggests that Alibaba, often referred to as The Amazon of China, is going to launch its own smart speaker that will be similar to the Amazon Echo. However, it’s believed that Alibaba’s product will just be limited to china.
Alibaba already has a very strong footing in the Chinese market so it can easily leverage that to get its product into as many homes as possible. The report mentions that Alibaba’s smart speaker will be targeted exclusively at domestic customers in the country.
Its features are said to include voice-controlled shopping from Alibaba-owned shopping platforms like Taobao and Tmall. The infrastructure that it already has in place will enable Alibaba to effectively make up ground for its smart speaker against the onslaught of similar devices from rivals like Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon.
No word as yet on how much the smart speaker is going to cost and precisely what it will be capable of. It’s said that Alibaba is going to make an announcement regarding this as soon as next week.
