According to the report, Kuo is saying that Apple will be bundling all of its 2017 iPhones with a 5W charger. This is pretty much what Apple has been offering all along which means that there will be no changes. However Kuo does state that he believes the iPhone 8 could feature an embedded USB-C power delivery IC for higher charging efficiency, but that’s the only difference and the phones will continue to be shipped with a USB-A to Lightning cable, but we guess MacBook Pro owners can always buy a USB-C to Lightning cable separately if needed.
In addition to this, Kuo also mentions that wireless charging for the iPhone will be sold separately and will not be a default feature out of the box. Kuo believes that because of wireless charging, all the iPhone models will be sporting glass bodies with metal frames to facilitate the technology, which is apparently said to be of the Qi variety.
This pretty much means that wireless charging of the iPhone will be of the inductive charging type, versus “true” wireless charging. Take it with a grain of salt for now, but Kuo has been pretty accurate with his reports in the past, so there’s a chance he could be right again.
