We guess it’s safe to assume that this has led to more eye problems being developed over the years, but it seems that it might run deeper than that. According to a report from WIRED UK, it seems that our obsession with our smartphones could actually be changing the shape of our eyes.
This is according to ophthalmologist Andrew Bastawrous who was quoted as saying, “Many more people are becoming shortsighted than they were a decade ago. The implications of this are not just that there are more people needing glasses, but that their condition is pathological.” While Bastawrous doesn’t explicitly say our mobile devices are to blame, he doesn’t see how else this could be happening.
Bastawrous said, “The initial theory for this is that people are doing more near-plane reading activity with smartphones which is encouraging the eye to become myopic to meet that environmental need. There’s also evidence that suggests this is happening too quickly for it to be purely an environmental or genetic response.”
