Sphero has launched a new toy today as it continues its long-standing partnership with Disney that has brought us toys like the BB-8 and Lightning McQueen. However, the company’s latest toy is a bit different. It doesn’t more around like the droid or the racing car, the new Sphero Spider-Man toy has actually been described as a “storyteller.”
The Spider-Man toy from Sphero appears to have an infinite supply of jokes that it can tell on-demand. He can even chat with you on a variety of topics that include dating and school. No wonder Sphero co-founder and Chief Software Architect Adam Wilson calls it “a storyteller.”
The toy is a nice little tie-in with the new Spider-Man movie that has been getting a lot of traction recently. It’s a reboot of the popular franchise, one that’s anxiously awaited. That’s not all. There’s also a PS4-exclusive Spider-Man game which is going to be released next year.
Sphero’s Spider-Man features expressive LCD eyes, a speaker, a microphone, and an accelerometer. The infrared sensor enables the toy to enter “guard mode” to warn users if someone enters their room.
The toy can be controlled using the iOS and Android companion app though users will mostly interact with the toy using voice commands. Wilson does point out that the droid’s conversational engine has been built from the ground up and that it’s a “full Android device.”
It’s not going to be cheap. Sphero’s Spider-Man toy costs $149.99.
