Magic: The Gathering Card Game Will Be Made Into An MMO

Even if you don’t play collectible card games, you have probably heard of Magic: The Gathering which is one of the biggest CCGs around at the moment. Now the game might have started off in physical format, but over the years there have been various digital adaptations, but for the most part they have pretty much retained the core gameplay of battling it out using cards.

However that is all set to change. In an announcement by Wizards of the Coast, it seems that they have tapped two developers in the form of Cryptic Studios and Perfect World and will be making an MMO out of the Magic: The Gathering franchise, promising a triple-A game in the process. Details are a bit scarce right now, but the game is expected to be launched on multiple consoles and the PC.

In a press release sent to GamesBeat, Bryan Huang, the chief executive officer of Perfect World Entertainment said, “It’s Magic: The Gathering like you’ve never experienced before. We are ecstatic about the direction of the game Cryptic has been shaping. It’s always been a dream of ours to bring Magic’s Planeswalkers to a modern RPG.”

Given how many players around the world are still playing the game, both physical and digital, it will be interesting to see how the reception to this game will be like. In a way it is rather ironic as we have seen RPGs spin-off into card games, such as Blizzard’s Hearthstone and The Witcher’s Gwent, so to see a card game try to turn itself into an MMO is an interesting turn of events.
