In a report from Axios, a supplier by the name of Finisar has revealed during its earnings call that they expect one company to account for millions of purchases of its specialized laser known as VCSEL. While Finisar did not name the company explicitly, Loup Ventures has speculated that only one company might have a need for so many units of this component, and that is none other than Apple.
For those unfamiliar with why Apple might have the need for laser, it has been suggested that this could help further Apple’s augmented reality efforts, especially with the launch of ARKit. It is said to help with better depth-sensing and object mapping, and could potentially be used for facial recognition which is one of the rumored iPhone 8 features.
All of this seems to be in line with what we’ve been hearing so far, but whether or not this speculation is based on the rumors or if it has accurately predicted the iPhone 8’s launch window remains to be seen, so take it with a grain of salt. However if true, it looks like rumors that the iPhone 8 could be delayed might have been dispelled.
