The United States decided to ban electronic devices larger than smartphones on all commercial flights coming out of select Middle Eastern countries in March this year. The ban remains in place and as airlines try to find a workaround, the government appears to be thinking about expanding the ban further. It was reported last month that perhaps flights out of Europe might be covered under it as well. The latest reports suggest that the U.S. might expand the ban to flights out of the United Kingdom soon.
The report claims that the United States is thinking about expanding the electronics ban to flights departing airports in the United Kingdom.
If the ban is expanded, passengers will not be able to board a flight headed to the United States with any electronic device that’s larger than a smartphone. All such electronic devices, which include cameras, tablets, and notebooks, will have to be check-in and stored in the cargo hold.
A decision on this matter might come soon. CBS News reports that the Department of Homeland Security is going to make a final decision about this “in the next few weeks.” The report also mentions that this extension of the ban is “likely.”
The White House is expected to make an official statement later this week.
