However if speed tests are anything to go by, Apple’s iPhones are actually no slouch, especially the iPhone 7 which has managed to blow away the competition in 2016 thanks to its A10 chipset. It is expected that Apple will use a newer chipset for its iPhones later this year and thanks to a report from DigiTimes (via 9to5Mac), it seems that the production of the A11 chipset has already begun.
The report claims that TSMC has already started its production of the A11 chipset using the 10nm manufacturing process. It also seems that TSMC will be the sole provider of the A11 chipsets, whereas in the past Apple has sourced from other companies simultaneously, such as with Samsung.
It is unclear as to what kind of specs we are looking at with the A11, but presumably it should be faster, more powerful, and more efficient than its predecessor, but we guess we’ll just have to wait for the official benchmarks to find out. Apple’s new iPhones are expected to be announced later this year, but there are some rumors that the iPhone 8 could be delayed, although that remains to be seen.
