You might have read last week that hackers had demanded that Netflix pay them a ransom or they would release the as-yet unreleased fifth season of Netflix’s hit show Orange is the New Black. Netflix didn’t pay the ransom so they went ahead and leaked the entire season online. According to a new report, the hackers may have stolen 36 other TV shows.
DataBreaches.net reports that it received a preview of the stolen shows from the hacking group that goes by TheDarkOverlord. The shows were swiped from Larson Studios and include some popular names like Portlandia, New Girl, NCIS: Los Angeles, and many more.
The list of leaked content also includes a YouTube Red original, the movie XXX: Return of Xander Cage, and even Netflix’s Bill Nye Saves the World. The hacking collective’s objective here is to seek ransom from the companies affected if they don’t want their content to be leaked online.
Netflix didn’t pay up so the entire fifth season of Orange is the New Black was leaked online. The online streaming giant has said that the authorities are now involved and that an investigation is underway.
Whether any studios will pay the ransom remains to be seen. We don’t even know how much the group is asking for but so far it doesn’t appear that some of the big names like Fox and IFC have paid a ransom to stop the premature release of their new content.
