The good news is that it seems that the reason behind the 720p resolution of the game isn’t because that the Switch is not powerful enough, but rather it turns out that there might be some technical issues which is why Microsoft opted to keep it at 720p. This was confirmed in TIME’s review of the game in which Microsoft told the publication that there were some issues switching from docked to undocked.
The report reads, “Microsoft notes that Minecraft’s 720p docked/undocked resolution isn’t a question of system power, but stems from issues currently experienced shifting from one resolution to the other when docking/undocking.” Based on this, it would imply that the Switch could potentially run the game at 1080p, although whether or not that will happen remains to be seen.
In any case Nintendo’s philosophy has mostly been about focusing on the gameplay rather than on the technical aspects of their hardware, and if the sales of the Switch are any indication, it seems that their gamers don’t particularly mind either.
