Nintendo has announced today that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Nintendo Switch console has become the fastest-selling Mario Kart game in the history of this franchise. The previous record for the highest first-day sales in this franchise was held by Mario Kart Wii. It sold more than 433,900 copies on launch day back in 2008. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold more copies than that when it was released on April 28th.
The company today confirmed that it sold more than 459,000 digital and physical copies of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for Nintendo Switch combined on the game’s April 28th launch day.
This equates to an attach rate of 45 percent, which means that one in two Nintendo Switch owners in the United States picked up a copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the very first day. Nintendo adds that it has so far sold more than 2.7 million Nintendo Switch consoles across the globe.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has also received more perfect review scores than any other Mario Kart game before it. It has a current Metacritic score of 93 and happens to be the highest-rated game in the series in 15 years.
Nintendo intends to continue this momentum into the summer so it’s hyping up the launch of great games for the Nintendo Switch in the coming months. These games include Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition, Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers, and Splatoon 2.
