If a new report is to be believed, Apple is soon going to phase out the iPad mini from its tablet lineup. The company is apparently taking this step due to cannibalism of its own products as the boundaries between small tablets and large smartphones blur. Previous reports have suggested that iPad mini sales have dropped so it wouldn’t really be surprising if Apple decides to discontinue it.
BGR hears from an alleged Apple source that there has been “fierce cannibalism of our own products” and that the iPad mini has been “sized out of its own category.” The source also adds that the device’s weak sales have been very clear.
What the report doesn’t mention is that whether Apple intends to discontinue this product immediately or whether it will continue to sell the iPad mini for a few months before its discontinued. The company hasn’t released a new model since the iPad mini 4 which came out back in 2015.
The iPad mini’s sales have reportedly been cannibalized by 5.5 inch iPhone Plus models. Even though the iPad mini has a slightly larger 7.9 inch display, most customers would like to have the added incentive of actually being able to use the iPhone as a phone and not just be limited to a tablet that can’t make phone calls.
Apple hasn’t confirmed anything about its plans to discontinue the iPad mini so take this report with a grain of salt until we hear something from Cupertino.
