There are many virtual reality (VR) headsets available at the moment, and they all come in varying price points as well as differing in terms of features. While you might have expected more powerful headsets like the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift to be the most popular, it turns out that Samsung is actually dominating that field.
According to the latest numbers from SuperData, it has been revealed that Samsung’s Gear VR has managed to ship 782,000 units in Q1 of 2017. With these numbers, it has made the Gear VR the most popular VR headset in the market today, although it did get some help as it is one of the bundled freebies with the recently launched Samsung Galaxy S8.
The second most popular VR headset would be Sony’s PlayStation VR which shipped 375,000 which is clearly and rather obviously nowhere close to the numbers we’re seeing from Samsung. The HTC Vive on the other hand did not even break the 100,000 mark and only shipped 95,000 units, while the Oculus Rift came in last at 64,000 units.
It should be noted that the Gear VR is intended to be used with smartphones, particularly those made by Samsung. The things you can do with it is also different from what other headsets are offering, but then again there is the price point in which the Gear VR definitely makes it more accessible. Based on this, SuperData thinks that the Gear VR could very well ship as many as 6.7 million units by the end of the year.
