Samsung introduced its beautiful Infinity Display with the Galaxy S8. The new flagship makes room for the larger display by getting rid of the physical home button. However, it appears that Samsung prepared for the eventuality of not being able to manufacture the Galaxy S8 as it first intended. The company actually patented a Galaxy S8 with a physical home button.
Removing the home button presents its own set of challenges, including but not limited to figuring out how to manage the software keys for essential tasks. Samsung also had to relocate the fingerprint sensor which is now placed on the back alongside the camera.
It’s not uncommon for smartphone companies to go through several design prototypes before it decides on one that’s going to make the cut. It may have also patented this design just to have a backup in case it wasn’t able to do everything that it wanted to do with the Galaxy S8’s design.
The diagrams from the patent show what the Galaxy S8 would have looked like had Samsung gone ahead with the physical home button. Given that now we know just how gorgeous the Galaxy S8 looks, a physical home button would have certainly killed its visual appeal.
It’s good that Samsung did what it did with the Galaxy S8’s design.
