Motorola and Verizon have a longstanding deal which saw the former’s handsets coming to Big Red with the exclusive Droid branding. Verizon has launched countless headsets with the Droid branding but now it appears that this deal is nearing its end. A new report suggests that future Motorola handsets won’t be released under the Droid branding on Verizon.
Verizon used the Droid branding for Motorola flagship smartphones that were only made through Big Red. It was a pretty special deal as Verizon had exclusivity over those smartphones. The most recent devices to come under that brand include the Moto Z Force Droid and Moto Z Droid.
Famous Twitter leakster Evan Blass a.k.a @evleaks has now tweeted his prediction that Motorola’s smartphones on Verizon are no longer going to be Droid-branded. He doesn’t provide a reason as to why this would happen.
The obvious impact of this decision would be that more Motorola smartphones will be available from carriers other than Verizon in the United States. Handsets that were made available to Verizon exclusively as part of the deal would now be available to those customers who don’t want to stick with Verizon’s cellular service.
There hasn’t been a confirmation about this either from Verizon or Motorola so take it with a grain of salt, @evleaks’ record notwithstanding, until we hear more from the companies in question.
I'm not sure if Motorola's offerings on Verizon are going to be DROID-branded anymore.
