According to the report, apparently LG has been working with a facial recognition solutions company by the name of Oez, and that following a series of negotiations and testing, the company’s facial scanning software will be deployed in the LG G6 come this June in the form of a software update. This is rumored to be launched in conjunction with LG Pay which was confirmed to be released in South Korea this coming June.
Take it with a grain of salt for now but if this does happen, LG could be the first smartphone maker to offer up facial scanning technology for mobile payments, whereas in the past the common tactic was to use fingerprint recognition. There have been talks that Apple could adopt a similar feature, but that has yet to be confirmed.
Samsung has included facial recognition in the Galaxy S8 as one of the security options, but it seems that the feature was only intended to be for “fun” which makes sense given that it appeared to be easily tricked into unlocking using a photograph.
