For those who are unfamiliar, Map Maker was introduced back in 2008 as a way for users to make contribution to Google Maps. Users could add features like roads, highways, rivers, and so on that would help make an area as detailed and complete as possible, although it seems that this also led to some users taking advantage of it to vandalize Google Maps.
Now Google had already announced back in 2016 that they would be shutting down Map Maker, so we guess the time has come. According to Google, “Since 2008, the Google Map Maker community has edited and moderated millions of features to improve the Google Maps experience. To make it easier for all Google Maps users to contribute changes to the map, we’ve started to graduate functionality from Map Maker to Google Maps on both desktop and mobile.”
Basically while Map Maker will be going away, some of its features will continue to live on in Google Maps, so the community can still make their contributions if they wish.
