In an announcement by the company, “The first phase of BlackBerry’s strategy, announced in September 2016, was focused on providing the most secure and comprehensive Android software for smartphones around the world manufactured and marketed by TCL Communication, PT BB Merah Putih and Optiemus Infracom Ltd. The company is now pursuing additional endpoints which could include tablets, wearables, medical devices, appliances, point-of-sale terminals and other smartphones.”
Basically BlackBerry will now allow its brand to be licensed out to all kinds of gadgets, such as tablets which we mentioned yesterday, and interestingly enough wearables as well. BlackBerry has never launched a wearable so it will be interesting to see which company could choose to create one with the BlackBerry branding.
According to The Verge, a Blackberry spokeswoman confirmed to them that what this means is that future BlackBerry-branded products will feature tech or code provided by the company, which we can only imagine might be security related. This could end up being a good or bad thing for the company since there is potential to dilute the BlackBerry brand, but we’ll just have to wait and see what will be the result of this.
