That’s a lot of panels and given that Apple does not have many OLED products, it is largely speculated that these displays will be going towards the iPhone, which is probably one of Apple’s best-selling products. The report quotes IHS Markit analyst David Hsieh who thinks that Samsung could actually end up producing 95 million units in total for Apple by the end of 2017, assuming there is a demand for it.
In case you’re hearing about it for the first time, one of the popular rumors surrounding the 2017 iPhone is that it will sport an OLED display. However the OLED iPhone will be limited to one model, which some are calling the iPhone Edition which is supposed to represent a celebration of the iPhone’s 10th anniversary.
This means that in addition to the regular iPhone and iPhone Plus models, there will be a separate model that will feature the use of OLED screens. It was previously rumored that due to the apparent shortage of OLED screens that’s why Apple is limiting OLEDs to one iPhone model as opposed to across their entire range, but take it with a grain of salt for now and we should have the official details later this year.
