Samsung has millions of Galaxy Note 7 units lying in warehouses as it had to recall the units it had shipped after it decided to discontinue the handset merely weeks into the launch due to battery issues. The company has since figured out what caused the handset to catch fire for no apparent reason. It has now confirmed that the Galaxy Note 7 will be making a comeback as a refurbished smartphone.
It’s not like we haven’t heard about this before. There have been rumors that Samsung might sell refurbished units of the Galaxy Note 7 in select markets across the globe.
Samsung has actually come up with three principles to ensure that the Galaxy Note 7 units are processed and recycled in a manner that’s environmentally-friendly. “First, devices shall be considered to be used as refurbished phones or rental phones where applicable,” it says.
The company is also going to detach salvageable components for reuse and will use processes like metals extraction in an environmentally-friendly manner.
As far as refurbished or rental phones go, the applicability is going to depend on Samsung’s consultations with regulatory authorities, carriers as well as consideration of the local demand. This is why no markets and release dates have been confirmed as yet for the refurbished Galaxy Note 7.
Those units that aren’t refurbished will have their components like semiconductors and camera modules detached by companies that specialize in these services. These components will later be used for test sample production purposes.
Samsung will then extract precious metals like nickel, gold, copper, and silver by relying on eco-friendly companies that specialize in these processes to complete left over component recycling.
