You Can Now Play 4K Videos On PS4 Pro

The PlayStation 4 Pro is 4K-compatible so it can power games and media content up to 4K resolution but so far it has not been possible to play your own 4K content. Console owners have been limited to services like YouTube and Netflix if they want to play 4K video on PlayStation 4 Pro. That changes today as Sony has sent out an update for the console which makes it capable of playing 4K video that you may have recorded using your smartphone.

Sony has confirmed that starting today, the Media Player app is getting an update to support 4K video playback on the PS4 Pro. This means that once the app is updated, users will be able to play 4K videos in mp4 format saved on a USB stick or home server on the Media Player app. This update will also enable the Media Player to support playback of 4K VR video content on the PlayStation VR.

PS4 Pro owners need to keep in mind that their home server will appear as a media option in the Player automatically and that USB storage that has already been formatted as extended storage for the console can only be used to save apps and games, not for saving and playing videos.

It goes without saying that to take advantage of the PlayStation 4 Pro’s ability to playback 4K videos you also need to have a 4K TV.
