The PlayStation 4 established a lead over the Xbox One right out of the gate after both consoles were released in late 2013. The PlayStation 4 has maintained its lead ever since. Even though Microsoft said that it saw its best month yet for the Xbox One in January 2017, it still remained behind the PlayStation 4.
Microsoft says that the Xbox One saw its best month yet in the United States ever since it was launched in November 2013. The company also claimed that the Xbox One was the only eighth generation console that saw year-over-year growth in the month of January 2017.
“Thanks to continued support by our fans, 2017 is off to a strong start as Xbox One game hours grew 21 percent year-over-year,” said Mike Nichols, corporate vice president of Xbox Marketing, adding that “In addition, in the U.S., Xbox One had its best January to date and was the only eighth generation console that saw growth in January compared to the prior year according to NPD Group.”
On the other hand, Sony claimed that PlayStation remained the best-selling console in the previous month. It may have received an additional boost from the launch of Resident Evil VII as well because the PS4 version of this game has a slight edge over its Xbox One counterpart, it has support for virtual reality.
