Microsoft has confirmed a new picture-in-picture mode for Windows 10. This is going to make it much easier for users to work with multiple applications at the same time, particularly when they are working on video-related tasks. The feature is officially called Compact Overlay windows and it’s included in Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 15031. The beta build has now been released to developers who can take this feature for a spin starting today.
Compact Overlay enables Windows 10 users to run an app in a small window that can be pinned above all other applications. This ensures that the window appears in view at all times without being intrusive like a normal window.
This can come in handy in more ways than one. For example, one could keep Skype open in a small window like this and keep that in view while they do everything else without having it intrude upon other windows.
Microsoft does point out that Compact Overlay windows will work like normal windows in all other ways so developers will find it easy to adapt apps to be compatible with this feature. It’s only limited to the Windows Insider build at this point in time but it will be out soon for all users possibly with the Windows 10 Creators Update that’s due in a few weeks.
