It has been a long time since Verizon decided that it was no longer going to offer truly unlimited mobile data plans. This was about five years ago and most of its rivals went down the same road back then. However, carriers like T-Mobile and Sprint have brought back unlimited data plans in one form or the other recently, and that’s probably what has compelled Big Red to follow suit. A new Verizon unlimited data plan is now being offered after almost five years.
Verizon made the announcement via its YouTube account. The video features Verizon vice president Ronan Dunne who says that the carrier has been working “quietly but tirelessly behind the scenes to deliver exactly what you’ve asked for.”
The video is more or less a big advert for the unlimited data plan which also explains why Verizon has decided to offer it now and not before even though this is something that its customers have long been asking for.
Verizon’s new unlimited data plan costs $80 per month and also provides unlimited talk and text. There’s one caveat. Users might find their mobile data being throttled once they hit 22GB of consumption in a billing cycle while audio and video streams will be compressed.
Verizon will provide discounts on multi-line plans which will come out to $45 for four smartphones or tablets. The carrier is yet to confirm prices for two, three, or more than four lines. Tethering will be allowed but users will be bumped down to 3G speeds once they hit 10GB.
