Amazon-owned Twitch is already one of the biggest game streaming services on the planet and now it’s going to make its presence felt in other areas of the gaming industry. The company has confirmed that soon it will start selling games and in-game content as well. Stream viewers will be able to buy games made available by both big and independent publishers through the channels of their favorite streamers.
Twitch has confirmed that it’s going to start selling games and in-game content later this year. This is going to be an entirely new revenue stream for the company and it’s going to share a cut of those sales with streamers. The company details that partnered streamers will get 5 percent of sales that originate on their channels while 70 percent will go to the game’s creators.
Customers who make any purchase over $4.99 on Twitch’s platform will get additional Twitch-specific items through a service called “Twitch Crate,” it may include a random selection of emotes, Bits, and badges. Some big publishers are already onboard and their games will soon be sold via Twitch, this includes the likes of Telltale Games and Ubisoft.
Other major publishers like Activision, Bandai Namco, EA, and Square Enix have not yet confirmed if they will work with Twitch on this. As far as the launch is concerned, Twitch hasn’t provided a confirmed release date as yet, but does say that it will begin selling games sometime in the spring of 2017. Game purchase will be available worldwide and payments will be made using an Amazon account, all pricing will be in U.S. dollars at launch.
