According to one Jodie Eason who spoke to BuzzFeed News, “I feel that someone that wants to colonize Mars and who worries about the machine uprising should not be scared to voice opinions counter to the Trump administration. We figured that speaking with our dollars is really the most effective way to get through to business people.”
Another customer by the name of Nate Erickson who calls himself a huge, huge fan of Musk and the things he has done similarly cancelled his order, and was quoted as saying, “To see someone that I’ve always looked up to so much, give such a half-hearted, mealy-mouthed statement — it was really disappointing.”
This seems to stem from the fact that prior to the election, Musk told CNBC that he thought Trump was not the right guy for the White House, but a recent interview with Gizmodo quoted him as saying, “Simply attacking him will achieve nothing. Better that there are open channels of communication.” It is unclear as to exactly how many Tesla orders have been cancelled as a result of Musk’s political leanings and for all we know it could be a very small number, but it is clear that some of their customers aren’t too thrilled about it.
