T-Mobile Is Hoping To Be An All-LTE Network By 2019

[MWC 2017] Right now pretty much all smartphones support LTE connectivity, which is great. However despite these advancements in technology, for some reason there are still quite a few customers out there who are still relying on 2G, which means that carriers out there who still have to support the technology.

Earlier this year AT&T announced that they would begin to shut down their 2G network, but unfortunately for T-Mobile that end is nowhere near in sight for them, although it is a goal that they are aspiring to for the next few years. Speaking at an Ericsson press conference held at MWC 2017, T-Mobile’s CTO Neville Ray offered a soft target by 2019, according to a report by PC Mag.

According to Ray, he was quoted as saying, “With handset refresh cycles, you look at 2019, and I think it’s an opportunity to move to an all-LTE network.” Whether or not the carrier will be able do so remains to be seen, but Ray also indicated that the carrier would like to have GSM turned down by 2020.

Ray also said, “By 2020, we’d love to have GSM turned down, if not before. What do we do first, 3G or 2G? That’s primarily driven by what you can do on voice.”
