With the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo has adopted a new strategy and one that is used by Sony and Microsoft, which is that they will be offering paid online services. This online service is pretty much a necessity for gamers if they are hoping to play online games and basically unlock the Switch’s full potential.
However at the time of announcement, the company did not mention how much the service could cost, but that has been revealed during a recent interview that Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima did with Nikkei. According to Kimishima, he says that the service is expected to cost 2,000 to 3,000 yen a year (which roughly works out to ~$20-30 since we doubt Nintendo will do a direct conversion).
This means that unlike other services like PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live that costs $9.99 a month, Nintendo’s online services works out at roughly $1.70-2.50 a month. Even the packaged deals offered by Sony and Microsoft don’t even work out to be that cheap, so we guess on that front Nintendo might have an advantage.
We know that despite the relatively affordable price tag, some gamers will miss the fact that prior to this Nintendo did not charge for their online services, but we guess if there an opportunity for Nintendo to monetize their services, why wouldn’t they?
