iPhone 8 Could Replace Lightning Connector With USB-C

With the iPhone 5, Apple did away with the 30-pin dock connector and replaced it with a smaller and reversible Lightning connector. Sure there were some complaints at the start, but eventually Lightning became the standard connector for the iPhone and many accessories that were launched for it.

However come the iPhone 8, Apple is rumored to make some changes yet again. In a report from The Wall Street Journal (paywall; via 9to5Mac), they are claiming that Apple is expected to ditch the Lightning connector on the iPhone 8 and instead replace it with the industry standard USB-C.

Apple is a company that is notorious for using proprietary technology, going as far as creating non-conventional screws so that the iPhone would be harder to be disassembled, so for Apple to decide to conform to USB-C is an interesting move (although there are some who have speculated that USB-C’s invention was helped along by Apple).

However given that the MacBooks have already made the transition to USB-C, maybe Apple is hoping to bring it all together somehow. The WSJ’s report had also previously suggested that the iPhone 8, which is said to be the 10th anniversary iPhone, will feature a curved OLED display. Take it with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think of Apple potentially moving to USB-C for the iPhone 8? Yay or nay?
