Google’s Project Fi might be a good option for those who don’t want to be stuck with a conventional carrier but they do have to trade the very crisp-sounding LTE voice calls that are possible on conventional mobile networks like T-Mobile. However, that’s an adjustment that they will no longer have to make in the future because Google has started testing LTE voice calls for Project Fi.
The company has told Project Fi subscribers that it has started testing LTE voice calls with a “subset” of the Project Fi user base. VoLTE calls on Project Fi may only work when it’s running on T-Mobile’s network considering the fact that it’s the only one of Fi’s three partners with VoLTE support.
It will be immediately evident to users when they are on VoLTE because the quality will be significantly better, they will get faster mid-call data speeds, and the connection time will be much quicker.
Google is yet to confirm when VoLTE will be enabled for all Project Fi subscribers but perhaps it may be waiting for the other partners, Sprint and U.S. Cellular, to bring support for VoLTE at some point later this year before enabling it for all Project Fi users.
