One of the more exciting rumors about the upcoming iPhone 8 is that it will feature wireless charging. However what’s more exciting is that there are some rumors that claim that it will be “true” wireless charging that does not require a charging mat, although there are some who are suggesting that Apple could instead turn to more conventional methods.
This was recently evidenced when it was discovered that Apple had joined the Wireless Power Consortium, the same group in which the Qi wireless charging standard is part of. This has led to speculation that maybe for now, Apple could still rely on existing wireless charging techniques. However according to a report from Reuters, Apple’s interest in wireless charging is still very strong.
The report is claiming that Apple has at least five groups within the company that are working on wireless charging technology. This means that while it might be that this year’s iPhone could skip the “true” wireless charging that we’ve all been waiting and hoping for, the company is still exploring the technology and it is possible that we could see it implemented in future models, or maybe even for different Apple products.
Interestingly enough this is a slightly different take compared to a report from earlier this year in which wireless charging company Energous said that their technology will be shipping this year, and there have been some evidence linking the company to Apple, but either way we’ll just have to wait and find out for ourselves.
