Over the years, Sony has demonstrated some very impressive, or even “dream” short throw projector. At CES 2017 the Sony VPL-VZ1000ES will fulfill this role, as a High Dynamic Range 4K projector that can be placed as close as 6-inches away from the 100-inches projection plane.
This feat is made possible thanks to a laser projection engine called Sony Z-Phosphor and optics that can properly Keystone an image that would have seemed very difficult to project at such short range. Projecting a 100” or even 120” 4K image from this distance is a technical feat that opens new possibilities in terms of interior design.
Measuring 36 x 20 x 9 inches in size (925 x 494 x 219mm) this projector can sit fairly discreetly in a room, unnoticed until the screen is rolled down, or until an image is projected. It is also 40% smaller than the previous short throw projector that came with its own piece of furniture. We tried that Sony Projector at CES 2014 and were already impressed by that one.
"A DREAM PROJECTOR"Projectors typically need to be very powerful (bright) because they reflect off a surface, instead of emitting light. This projector has a brightness of 2500 Lumens, which is 25% brighter than the last generation.
At $24999, the VPL-VZ1000ES Ultra-Short Throw 4K HDR Home Theater Projector isn’t cheap, but if you keep in mind that Sony’s previous such projector started around $40,000, there’s an improvement in “affordability”. Unfortunately, most people won’t be able to experience it, let alone buy it, but for the lucky ones who can, it is a dream projector.
