A rumor late last year indicated that Samsung could be ditching their plans for a dual-lens setup for the Galaxy S8. However despite that, it seems that the company has never stopped looking into the idea, thanks to a recently discovered patent that reveals an interesting application a dual-lens setup.
Basically at its core, it seems that the dual-lens setup will work similarly to Apple’s Portrait mode on iOS, where it will attempt to give the photo bokeh-like quality that would normally be only achievable on DSLRs. However in Samsung’s case, the company plans on taking advantage of object tracking and object recognition.
With object tracking recognition, the camera will be able to detect what object is in the foreground and what is the background. This means that users just need to point their camera at whatever they want and snap away, and the result will be a bokeh-like photo in which the subject in the foreground will be in focus while the background is blurred.
The tracking system will ensure that users will be able to adjust their zoom and framing and settings without worrying about losing focus on the subject. It’s an interesting idea but since it’s a patent, it’s hard to say if Samsung plans to make it a reality.
