Plex is widely known as the streaming media app that enables users to easily organize their media content and stream it to all of their devices. It’s now branching into the world of streaming video. The company today announced that it has acquired Watchup, a streaming news service. The company says that this is an important milestone for Plex in its mission to become the go-to standard for discovering, enjoying, and sharing media on all devices.
Watchup takes a slightly different approach to the news business. It provides users with a personalized experience which aggregates hundreds of the top news sources from across the globe, enabling users to build their own personalized newscasts from local, national, and international news sources based on their preferences. Watchup has more than 150 publishing partners which include the likes of CNN, CBS, Hearst Television, and others.
“Adding a trusted and reliable news experience into Plex, so that people can choose and organize the news they care about along with the other content they care about, is a natural next step for us,” said Keith Valory, CEO of Plex, while also revealing that more than ten million people across the globe use Plex to organize all of their media content.
Watchup will soon be easily accessible via Plex. The company didn’t confirm the financial terms of this acquisition.
