You know how back in the day radio used to be one of the main sources of entertainment and music? People would tune into radio to listen to stories being read, lively discussions, as well as listen to the latest songs. Make no mistake radio today still does that, but with the internet and on-demand streaming, is the FM radio still as important as before?
Over in Norway, it seems that maybe FM radio isn’t as popular anymore because according to a report from Reuters, it seems that the country could be making the move to switch off FM radio. This hardly spells the death of radio because while FM transmissions could be disabled, there is still internet/digital radio, so it’s just accessible via a different means.
Interestingly enough the majority of the country are against the idea, with an opinion poll finding that 66% of Norwegians oppose the move, while 17% are in favor of it, and the rest undecided, which even if they were to go for the idea it would still not be in the majority. This move will no doubt affect a lot of users, with estimations of about 2 million cars on the country’s roads that are not equipped with Digital Audio Broadcasting receivers.
It remains to be seen if other countries will follow suit, but we expect that just like all things technology, existing standards and formats will eventually be replaced.
