Nintendo Switch And 3DS To Exist Side-By-Side

nintendo-switch-4With the Nintendo Switch being marketed as a home console that also offers up portable gameplay, many have wondered if this could mean that the company could be looking to discontinue the Nintendo 3DS handheld console. After all why would gamers need two consoles if one already does the job of both, right?

Nintendo had previously stated that they will not be discontinuing the 3DS and in case you were wondering how true that statement holds a few months later, you’ll be pleased to learn that Nintendo is sticking to their guns. This is according to Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime who spoke to WIRED in an interview.

According to Fils-Aime, “3DS has a long life in front of it. We’ve already announced games that will be launching in the first couple quarters of this year. There are a number of big games coming. And in our view, the Nintendo 3DS and the Nintendo Switch are going to live side-by-side.”

He also clarifies that the Switch is first and foremost a home console. “I think there’s a sense that Nintendo Switch is a portable device. It is portable. But at its heart, it’s a home console that you can take with you on the go.” So if you still have a 3DS at home, not to worry as Nintendo is clearly not done with the console just yet. In the meantime gamers can look forward to the Switch’s availability which is set for the 3rd of March in the US and it will be priced at $300.
