Microsoft introduced its HoloLens augmented reality headset about a year back. Since it’s a first-generation product, it’s not really meant for the average joe. Microsoft made it clear from the get go that this product is meant for developers and businesses. With that being said, the company has revealed that Microsoft HoloLens sales aren’t that high. Forget millions, they’re not even in the hundreds of thousands.
Microsoft charges $3,000 for the HoloLens so even if an average user was interested in its augmented reality headset, they would think twice about spending $3,000 on this product.
The company has said that HoloLens sales are in the thousands. To be fair though, it’s not like the company was aiming to sell millions of HoloLens units.
In an interview with The Inquirer, Microsoft HoloLens commercial lead Roger Walkden said “We’re not trying to sell hundreds of thousands or millions or anything, it’s expensive, and it’s not in huge numbers,” adding that “We’re happy with the level of sales that we’ve got. I can’t tell you anything about the numbers, but it’s in thousands, not hundreds of thousands, and that’s fine. That’s all we need.”
It also remains to be seen if Microsoft will ever really come out with a consumer-focused AR headset. It may end up pushing some of this technology through its partner manufacturers as the company has hinted in the past that some of its partners could create their own affordable versions of the HoloLens.
