LG Smart InstaView refrigerator can listen and respond to voice commands as it features Amazon’s Alexa personal digital assistant. It also runs on LG’s own webOS smart platform. This is a direct competitor to Samsung’s Family Hub 2.0 refrigerator which features Samsung’s own voice recognition technology.
LG’s new refrigerator has a 29 inch touch LCD display which instantly turns transparent with just two knocks of the screen. This is the InstaView feature which lets users look inside the machine without actually having to open the doors.
LG has long used the webOS smart platform in its smart TVs but this is the first time that the company is expanding this platform to appliances like refrigerators.
Since it’s powered by the webOS smart platform, several Wi-Fi enabled features can be used directly on the Smart InstaView while Alexa can do a wide variety of tasks from reading recipes out loud to streaming music, ordering groceries from Amazon, and more.
There are more than 6,000 skills available for Alexa. It can control smart home devices, call an Uber, check the weather, run an internet search, set reminders, and more in response to voice commands.
LG is showcasing the Smart InstaView Refrigerator at its booth in the Las Vegas Convention Center as part of CES 2017. The company is yet to confirm how much this smart connected refrigerator costs and when it will be available for purchase.
