This is according to LG’s Chief Technologist Skott Ahn who confirmed that the upcoming LG G6 will be moving away from the modular design. Ahn also hinted that the phone could be launched soon as he was quoted as saying the LG G6 would be released “in the very near future.” Given that there were no announcements about the phone made during CES 2017, we can only assume that it will take place at MWC 2017 in February.
It isn’t surprising that LG has decided to do away with the modular design. After all even Google decided to shut down Project Ara and they were making some pretty serious headway. With LG abandoning the concept, it pretty much means that only Motorola is left in the game with the Moto Mods, although we guess that’s a slightly different approach from LG’s Friends ecosystem.
Signs of LG possibly abandoning the system were seen based on the various leaks that occurred during the past few months, which showed renderings of the phone that hinted that it would no longer be modular.
