Barnes & Noble launched its $50 Nook Tablet 7″ late last year. It was a unique device, one that the company released after years of selling co-branded Samsung tablets. Reports started surfacing a few days ago that the product has been the subject of a massive recall even though the company didn’t confirm anything about it. Barnes & Noble has now confirmed why it’s taking the tablet off of shelves.
According to recent reports, Barnes & Noble sent out a company-wide order to remove all Nook Tablet 7″ units from stores and ship them back to the supplier. The order even covered units at demo kiosks as well as other marketing materials.
Then rumors started circulating that perhaps the tablet was running the Adups spyware that has caused a lot of headaches for budget manufacturers like Blu. This is probably what compelled the company to make an official statement on the matter.
Barnes & Noble has confirmed that it’s investigating three reported cases involving the charger sold with the Nook Tablet 7″. The cases involve the adapter casing breaking apart while still plugging into the socket. The company confirmed that this issue doesn’t affect the device and that no injuries have been reported so far.
It has recommended that customers stop using the adapter “out of an abundance of caution” until a replacement adapter is provided to them. Barnes & Noble will work closely with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to determine the details of a public product recall.
