There was speculation prior to the start of CES 2017 that HTC would unveil the HTC Vive 2 headset at the annual tech conference. The company was quick to shoot down this rumor so we know it’s not going to unveil a new headset soon. Could HTC be preparing to launch a Vive-branded smartphone in the near future, though? That’s what a new leak will have you believe even though HTC has said no such thing at this point in time.
HTC has been struggling in the smartphone market for a couple of years now. On the other hand, its Vive virtual reality brand exists in its own little bubble, isolated from the troubles of HTC’s smartphone brand.
Infamous Twitter leakster @evleaks has tweeted out a purported promotional video from HTC which suggests that the company might release Vive-branded smartphones that are thin and powerful. The video talks about some of the creative steps that HTC is taking to make devices different from existing options that “fail to emotionally connect with the people that buy them.”
HTC’s Vive brand has so far been limited to its virtual reality headset. The company has not even hinted at expanding it to smartphones but on the face of it, it doesn’t seem like a bad idea. HTC has a clean slate with the Vive brand and if it feels that it can be used to stay competitive in the smartphone market, then perhaps it should try it out, don’t you think?
