Google’s Latest Acquisition Will Help Boost Hangouts Call Quality

Google’s Hangouts has been used for chatting, video conference, and making voice calls. For the most part the quality is decent and is typically good enough to get the job done. However Google thinks that there could be improvements made, which is why they have acquired Swedish company Limes Audio.

In a post on their blog, Google announced the acquisition of the company in which Limes Audio’s technology will be integrated into Google’s G Suite of apps. “As more and more businesses adopt our video conferencing solutions, powered by Chromebox for Meetings and Google Hangouts, it’s critical that we provide a great audio experience. With G Suite customers now relying on video communications for their day-to-day meetings, it’s more important than ever to ensure low-cost, high-quality audio.”

Google cites poor internet connectivity as one of the reasons behind bad audio quality, and with the acquisition, they expect that Limes Audio’s technology will “remove the distracting noise, distortion and echoes that can affect online video and telephony meetings, improving the overall online conference experience.”

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, so we’re not sure how much Google paid for the company, but then again that’s not that surprising anyway. So if you do rely on Hangouts quite a lot for video and voice calls, expect to see improvements made to the overall audio quality in the near future.
