That being said, FIFA is still a pretty huge franchise for the publisher and in an interview with IGN, the company’s executive vice president Patrick Soderlund explained the reason behind the company’s decision to support the Nintendo Switch at launch, which according to him was due to Nintendo constantly pushing the boundaries of what gaming is.
According to Soderlund, “What I like about Nintendo is that they come to the table with a slightly different approach. They’ve done that in the past to great success, and sometimes not so much, but I think unless you’re willing to think about something unconventional, it’s going to be hard to break ground.” He adds that Nintendo forces EA to “think differently” and “challenges convention”.
As to why EA chose FIFA, Soderlund said, “It’s our biggest brand. It’s the brand that spans across the most markets. It’s the brand that spans the biggest age demographic. It’s a mass market proposition. It’s a game a lot of people want to play.” He also teased that EA has more titles planned for the Switch but that will have to be revealed at a later date once the platform has launched.
